I went for something simple that would be easy to read. The sidebar navigation made use of Prototype and Script.aculo.us libraries to provide smooth slide-down and slide-up transitions for revealing sub-navigation. While this feature relied on Javascript, when Javascript was disabled the navigation functioned just as well, transporting the visitor to an index page with descriptions of sub-navigation for that section.
